Truro Opens Childcare Voucher and Rental Registration Windows

TRURO — Truro town officials this week opened two application windows residents will want to act on: a childcare voucher program with an August 31 deadline, and the 2026 short-term rental registration cycle, which now requires payment entirely online.

TOWN HALL

The town's Childcare Voucher Program is now accepting applications, with a firm deadline of August 31 at 4 p.m. for residents seeking a full year of funding. Officials noted a second application period will open in February 2027, but only if funding remains available, making the August deadline the more reliable path for families seeking assistance.

Separately, the town has opened 2026 Short-Term Rental Registration. The process is now entirely online, covering both application and payment; Town Hall said it will no longer accept payments in person, by mail, or by phone. The 2026 permit fee is $450, which includes the required inspection.

Town Hall also flagged a Route 6 safety reminder, urging drivers to observe the speed limit, avoid cell phone use, and watch for pedestrians, cyclists, and turning vehicles, particularly near the Transfer Station. Additionally, the town is updating its Open Space and Recreation Plan, which will guide open space and recreation priorities for the next decade; residents can weigh in through a community forum, by emailing pio@truro-ma.gov, or via the town's dedicated plan webpage.

Barnstable County is also sharing information about a proposed Charter Study Commission that will appear as a ballot question on the November 2026 state election ballot, including candidate requirements and filing deadlines for interested residents.

COMMUNITY & ARTS

The Truro Public Library is hosting "Affordable Housing: Understanding the Basics" on Thursday, August 6, at 10 a.m., a workshop aimed at demystifying housing terminology, project financing, and the application and lottery process for residents navigating the local housing market.

The library's Anne H. Brock Room is currently featuring "Garden Art," a community art show, and the library continues its "Plant a Seed, Read" program, made possible through the Friends of the Truro Library.

COMING UP

Wednesday, August 5 brings a busy library and town calendar: the Community Preservation Committee meets, along with the Planning Board. At the library, scheduled events include "Puppets, Paul & Mary's Summer Bucket List," a Medication Support session with the Honest Pharmacist, and Food for Kids.

On Thursday, August 6, the library hosts "Affordable Housing: Understanding the Basics" at 10 a.m., along with a Homeless Prevention Council Outreach session. The library's Introduction to Mahjong class that day is already full.
